How to crop a screen recording

Cropping cuts away the edges of the frame: the black border, the cluttered desktop strip, the second window you never meant to share. Trimming shortens the timeline instead. Cropping is free on any device - and you can often skip it by framing the recording right.

Frame it right in the studio

The short answer

To crop a screen recording for free: on iPhone, open the video in Photos, tap Edit and drag the crop corners. On Mac, open it in Photos, click Edit, then Crop, and pick a preset or custom ratio. On Windows, use the free Clipchamp cropper: drop the file on the timeline and drag the crop handles. In Creator Recorder, camera-led clips can use Face crop in the editor, and choosing the right canvas before recording avoids most cropping later.

1. Crop or trim: which one do you need?

Crop changes the visible frame - you keep the same length but cut away edges. Use it to remove a taskbar, a notification area or a messy desktop background, or to reframe a wide recording for a vertical platform. Trim changes the timeline - you keep the same frame but shorten the video. Microsoft's documentation treats cropping and trimming as different edits for this reason.

Most "fix my recording" jobs need a trim, not a crop. If the problem is dead time at the start or end, the trim guide is the faster fix. If the problem is what is visible inside the frame, read on.

2. Crop free on iPhone and Mac

iPhone: open the recording in Photos, tap Edit, then the crop tool. Drag the rectangle corners to enclose the area you want to keep, or pinch to zoom into the frame. Apple's Photos guide confirms this works for videos, not just photos, and with iCloud Photos the edit syncs across your devices.

Mac: open the video in Photos, double-click it, choose Edit, then Crop. Apple's Photos guide for Mac lets you crop a video to a preset or custom aspect ratio - 16:9 for YouTube, 9:16 for Shorts and Reels. QuickTime Player only trims; for cropping on a Mac, use Photos.

Both editors work on the file in place: duplicate the video first if you want to keep the uncropped original.

3. Crop on Windows with Clipchamp

Windows' built-in Clipchamp includes a free video cropper: upload the recording, drop it on the timeline, select it and drag the crop area in the preview. Clipchamp's crop tool can also reframe to new aspect ratios sized for YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and TikTok.

Crop conservatively. Every pixel you cut away lowers the effective resolution of what is left, so a heavy crop on a 1080p recording can look soft on a large screen.

4. The Creator Recorder workflow

Creator Recorder's local editor includes Face crop for camera-led clips: it analyses a selected clip (up to two minutes - split longer ones first) and reframes around your face, which suits vertical cuts of talking-head recordings. Watch the preview before downloading, as the app itself advises.

The bigger crop-avoidance tool is the canvas you pick before recording: the studio offers preset canvases such as 16:9 widescreen and 9:16 vertical, so the frame matches the platform from the start. Trim handles the timeline; the canvas handles the frame. For a freeform crop of an arbitrary region, download your file and use the Photos apps or Clipchamp above.

Common questions

Does cropping lower the video quality?

Cropping keeps the original pixels but fewer of them, so the output covers a smaller area of the source. A light crop on a high-resolution recording stays sharp; a heavy zoom-crop on 1080p can look soft. Record at the highest resolution available if you expect to crop - the 4K guide explains why.

Does cropping shorten the video?

No. Cropping changes the frame; the length stays the same. Shortening the timeline is trimming - see the trim guide.

Can I crop to a region that is not centred?

Yes. In Photos on iPhone and Mac, and in Clipchamp, you drag the crop area to any position - it does not have to be the middle of the frame.

Does Creator Recorder crop recordings?

The editor's Face crop automatically reframes camera-led clips around your face, and the studio's canvas presets frame the recording correctly at capture time. For an arbitrary manual crop region, download the file and use the free Photos or Clipchamp tools.
